Opera Fort Collins is an established performing arts group which provides productions of excellent quality and high performance standards. It intends to both entertain and educate its audiences, while providing training and work venues for local and guest artists in the many disciplines that comprise opera production: singers, instrumentalists, designers, costumers, choreographers, lighting technicians, and directors.
In 2004 Opera Fort Collins celebrates the 25th year of opera performances. Following the 1979 and 1980 independent productions, those in 1981 through 1990 were under the auspices of OpenStage Theatre. In 1991 Opera Fort Collins was formally incorporated as an independent entity, with Elizabeth Elliott as Artistic Director. The company presented its first opera in 1992. Each year thereafter, in August, Opera Fort Collins has staged an opera production. Operas are presented in English in order to make the performances easily accessible.
In 1998 Opera Fort Collins began an expanded, year-round program to include concerts and diverse opera-related events. In 1999 Opera Fort Collins added a winter opera production, especially for young people, launched a schools program in its local district, and held a regional singing competition. Additional events have been launched in subsequent years to enrich the community with vocal artistry. The company is now recognized as a unique and outstanding musical organization in Colorado.
